Cosmetic surgery is also named as Aesthetic surgery. It involves medical and surgical techniques to improve and enhance the appearance. But the main concern of cosmetic surgery is to maintain and restore the normal appearance. And enhancing the appearance to an aesthetic level simultaneously. Approximately 11 million cosmetic procedures had been performed in the US in 2006 and nearly 12 million in 2007. Since the start of the century, the number of cosmetic surgeries has increased by 50%. The five most common cosmetic surgeries are Abdominoplasty, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, liposuction and nasal surgery. Cosmetic surgery owns about a $ 2.2 billion business in Europe.

Cosmetic Surgery Procedures Include

  • Abdominoplasty : commonly known as “tummy tuck”. It deals with reshaping the abdomen and firming it
  • Blepharoplasty : It is the eye-lid surgery where either the eyelids are reshaped or a permanent eyeliner is applied to the eyes
  • Mammoplasty:
    • The common names of Breast Augmentations are “breast implant” or “boob job”. The breasts are augmented using fat grafting, saline or silicone gel prosthetics. It is generally done in women with micromastia (breasts are under-developed)
    • Reduction mammoplasty is known as “breast reduction”. The skin and the glandular tissue are removed to reduce the pain in the back and shoulder in women who are gigantomastic or macromastic (breasta are extreeme large in size weighing about 10 pounds or more). It is also done in few men for psychological benefit when they are gynecomastic (breast enlargement in men)
    • The technique of breast lift is termed as Mastopexy. The saggy breasts are lifted or reshaped to. The breast skin is removed as opposed to glandular tissue to make them appear less saggy after weight loss or pregnancy
  • Buttock augmentation is the other name of “butt implant”. The buttocks are enhanced by using silicone implants or fat grafting. The implants are generally transferred from other parts of the body
    • The redundant skin is excised to lift and tighten the buttocks. This is known as Buttock lift
  • The appearance of acne, skin marks, photodamage, chicken pox marks, aging spots, wrinkles and other scars is minimized using some chemical agents like carbolic acid (Phenol), glycolic acid (AHA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or salicylic acid (BHA). This is named as Chemical Peeling.
  • The reshaping and reduction of the labia by surgical methods is called Labiaplasty.
  • The lips are made to appear fuller through surgical enlargement. This is named as Lip enhancement
  • The reshaping of the nose is commonly known as a “nose job” or Rhinoplasty.
  • The ear surgery deals with pinning the ear closer to the head and reshaping the ears. This surgery is medically known as Otoplasty.
  • Rhytidectomy is the process of “face lift”. The wrinkles and signs of aging are removed from the face by this method
    • Browplasty is the method of “brow lift” or you may also call it as “forehead lift”. The eyebrows are lifted and the skin of the forehead is smoothed using this technique
    • Midface lift is the technique of “cheek lift” where the cheeks are tightened
  • Liposuction is called Suction-assisted lipectomy which is used to remove the excess body fat
  • The chin is augmented using a silicone implant or by sliding genioplasty of the jawbone. The soft tissues may also be sutured. This process is named as Chin augmentation or “chin implant”.
  • Implants to the cheeks are called Cheek augmentation or “cheek implant”
  • Using fillers injections of fat, collagen and other tissue fillers like hyaluronic acid
  • Laser skin resurfacing
